"The United States believes that all countries can choose the countries and groups with which they associate and is convinced of the value of international cooperation to promote sustainable development. The United States engages bilaterally with many individual countries that are members of BRICS," the U.S. diplomatic mission said.

In contrast to this approach, US President-elect Donald Trump had harsh words about BRICS on social media the day before. He said that if they adopt an alternative currency to the U.S. dollar or support some other currency, such countries "will face 100 percent tariffs and say goodbye to selling goods to the wonderful U.S. economy."

Donald Trump is scheduled to be inaugurated on January 20, 2025.
