High-Speed Railway will cut travel time from Moscow to St. Petersburg in half

The high-speed railroad (HSR), which will connect Moscow and St. Petersburg, will be able to cut travel time in half. This was told by the mayor of the capital Sergey Sobyanin on December 4.
"The big construction - about 700 km length of this road. The time to get from Moscow to St. Petersburg is halved. And the number of passengers that the lines are expected to carry, compared to what we have today, should increase by 4-5 times. That is, it is a completely different volume of transportation," he shared.
Sobyanin pointed out that about 40 million people live in the Moscow and St. Petersburg agglomerations, and the connection between these two regions will increase the synergy with neighboring regions as well.
"This is a gigantic all-Russian construction project. And of course, the main link here is the government of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Transportation, and Russian Railways. We help our colleagues as much as we can," summarized the mayor.
High-Speed Railway is an electrified double-track railway line for the operation of trains with speeds from 200 to 400 km/h.
Earlier, on November 8, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Savelyev said that the high-speed rail line between Moscow and St. Petersburg is planned to run 41 trains manufactured in Russia in 2028.
On September 24, Deputy Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation Dmitry Zverev said that the price of a ticket for the Moscow - St. Petersburg High-Speed Railway is expected to be 8.9 thousand rubles at the start of traffic in the third quarter of 2028.
Theidea of building an HSM between Moscow and St. Petersburg was supported by Russian President Vladimir Putin last August at the opening ceremony of the capital's MCD-3. He pointed out that the travel time along such a highway would be 2 hours and 15 minutes instead of the current four hours.
