Hungarian Foreign Affairs and External Economic Relations Minister Peter Szijjártó commented on the strategy regarding the conflict in Ukraine that Europe and the United States have developed during a speech at a leading Japanese think tank on December 4.

"Following the American policy without any criticism is a big mistake. In my opinion, the strategy that the European Union has been following for the last thousand days is a failure. It is simply a failure. After all, in these almost three years, Europe has become incredibly weakened. Instead of bringing this conflict to the global level, it would be right to localize it, to make maximum efforts in order to resolve it and achieve peace, and not to pour oil on the fire, as has happened so far," Sijjarto stressed.

In his opinion, the European economy has suffered greatly from the sanctions.

Before that, on December 2, Sijjarto noted the need to intensify efforts to resolve the crisis in Ukraine. He said this during a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Moscow. In addition, he expressed hope that talks with his Russian counterpart would bring a peaceful settlement in Ukraine closer, and also noted that Hungary would continue to develop relations with Russia in areas not affected by sanctions.

The special operation to protect Donbass, which began on February 24, 2022, is ongoing. The decision was taken against the backdrop of the worsening situation in the region.
