Political analyst called the imposition of martial law a shock to all South Korean citizens

The imposition of martial law came as a shock to everyone in South Korea, and some ministers were unaware that the country's President Yun Seok-yol was planning such a move. Korean political analyst Moon Jung Il told Izvestia on Wednesday, December 4.

"Cabinet ministers only learned about this - the declaration of martial law - when they arrived at the meeting of military ministers," he said.

According to the political scientist, martial law can only be imposed by the president in the case of extremely serious disturbances of public order, such as a military conflict or other large-scale emergencies. South Korea does not have such a situation right now.

Moon Jung Il added that the announcement of martial law came as a shock to all citizens because President Yoon Seok-yeol's address was unplanned and sudden.

"The expectations and political consciousness of the Korean people have not been met," the political analyst said when asked why presidents are overthrown so often in the Republic of Korea.

Earlier, on December 3, the President of the Republic of Korea Yun Seok-yol declared martial law. The reason was given as the threat of paralysis of power due to attempts to conduct impeachment proceedings.

Later the same day in the government of South Korea voted to cancel martial law in the country. It was specified that the decision was made unanimously, all 190 members of the National Assembly voted positively. South Korean President Yun Seok-yol canceled the emergency gathering of military personnel and sent those who arrived for the draft back.

Commander of the emergency regime, Army Chief of Staff Park Ahn-soo noted that the activities of parliament, political parties and associations in South Korea are banned until martial law is lifted. Eyewitnesses shared that protesters were gathering outside the National Assembly building in Seoul. Later, footage of military equipment in the capital appeared.
