US President-elect Donald Trump has been out of power for four years, during which time the dollar's position has been undermined. Russian President Vladimir Putin said this while commenting on Trump's threats to impose 100 percent duties on goods from BRICS countries at the VTB forum "Russia Calling!".

"All the same, the newly elected [US] president has not been in that very White House for four years. And in that time, there have been certain changes in the economy, in the global economy and in the U.S. economy. His successors and his political opponents have done a lot to undermine the fundamental basis of the dollar as the world's reserve currency," Putin said.

At the same time, the Russian leader noted that the American politician does not need anyone's advice.

"Mr. Trump is such a person who does not need advice and recommendations," the head of state concluded.

On November 30, Trump threatened BRICS countries with duties on trade with Washington if they abandoned the dollar in favor of the future new BRICS currency or other currencies. He then noted that such a measure would be taken if the members of the association decided to create their own currency.

Later, December 1, the head of the Federation Council Commission on Information Policy, Alexei Pushkov, called the introduction of duties on goods of BRICS countries unrealizable in practice. According to him, this threat is unrealistic because the United States is economically dependent on globalization and imports.
