Fraudsters have started using gif images in WhatsApp (owned by Meta, whose activities are banned in Russia). This was reported on December 4 by Sergey Lipov, Director of Information Technology at EdgeCenter.

"This time they (scammers. - Ed.) use gifs, which at first glance seem harmless and even pleasant. However, this appearance hides a serious threat - the gif can be embedded with malicious code or a link to a phishing site, which can steal all the user's personal data," he said in an interview with RT.

Lipov specified that such messages can be disguised as congratulations.

The expert advised Russians not to open gif images from unfamiliar contacts. In addition, even if the message came from an acquaintance, but looks suspicious, you should clarify the sender and its authenticity.

"Install reliable antivirus software and update it regularly. Keep your device and apps up to date with security updates. Inform yourself and your loved ones about modern threats on the Internet," the specialist recommended.

Earlier, on November 29, VTB Senior Vice President, Head of Digital Business Department Nikita Chugunov reported that in Russia the number of fraud cases related to the installation of remote access programs - SpyMax virus via WhatsApp messenger has increased. It was specified that in November this scheme was the most popular.
