- The Serpukhov Museum will open the exhibition "Factory of avant-garde. The pattern of a new world"

On December 18, 2024, the Serpukhov Museum of History and Art will open the exhibition "Factory of the Avant-Garde. Pattern of a New World", which will bring together significant works by Russian avant-garde artists and related everyday objects. The exhibition will include about 200 exhibits, including works by Natalia Goncharova, Mikhail Larionov, David Burliuk, Vladimir Favorsky, Anna Leporskaya and other masters, as well as textiles, chalkboards, tiles, wooden utensils and other objects of folk art that played an important role in transforming the visual language of the early 20th century.
The exhibition is the result of the research work of young curators studying under the Avant-Garde Lab 6 program, a joint project of the Avant-Garde Center of the Jewish Museum and the Encyclopedia of the Russian Avant-Garde. Led by art historian and museum curator Alexander Kremer and Igor Smekalov, doctor of art history and researcher at the Tretyakov Gallery, the team studied the museum's collection in the context of the movement of 1920s art from the center to the regions and back. This process made it possible to rethink the key stages in the development of the avant-garde and create a concept that reveals the relationship between art, everyday life and social change. Andrei Sarabianov, an art historian and expert on Russian art of the 20th century, acted as a scientific consultant for the exhibition.
Vasily Kuznetsov, Minister of Culture and Tourism of the Moscow region: "Previous large exhibitions of the Serpukhov Museum of History and Art, created in cooperation with museums in Russia - "Makovskie. Konstantin and Vladimir", "Enigmas of Genius", "The World Created anew", "Image and Meaning", "Unforgettable", "Painting of Light" - received a great response from visitors.
Completely different from them will be a new inter-museum project "Factory of the avant-garde. Fashioning a New World". This is an exhibition-experiment, in which the research of the Serpukhov Museum's collection is combined with an attempt to expand the understanding of the controversial but fascinating process of development of the artistic language of modernism in Russia in the twentieth century. This is also the second major project in the newly renovated Karetny Saray, which maximizes the possibilities of the new venue. I am sure that the exhibition will receive great attention and a thoughtful audience.
The exposition is based on the collection of the Serpukhov Museum of History and Art, as well as exhibits from the Yekaterinburg Museum of Fine Arts and the Serpukhov Museum and Exhibition Center. The State Russian Museum provided special support to the project in terms of creating a multimedia exposition. The exhibition concept was developed with the participation of the Center for the Avant-Garde of the Jewish Museum and the Center for Tolerance, whose research helped to understand the movement of art from the center to the regions.
Zhanna Novak, Director of the Serpukhov Museum of History and Art: "Every year the Serpukhov Museum of History and Art implements major inter-museum projects, expanding the geography of cooperation, we are looking for relevant formats of interaction with the audience, making the museum modern and open to a variety of visitors. At the exhibition "Factory of the Avant-Garde. Many items are presented for the first time, and thanks to the support of the Yekaterinburg Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum and Exhibition Center of Serpukhov and the State Russian Museum we have managed to create a deep and comprehensive exhibition".
On December 17 at 20:00, ahead of the opening of the exhibition "Factory of the Avant-Garde. The pattern of a new world", the facade of the museum will become a screen for a dynamic multimedia projection. The short film, created over the course of six months, will take viewers through the key milestones of the Russian avant-garde, showing the most significant events and leading artists of the era in the format of a visual journey. You can purchase tickets and learn more about the event on the museum's website.
The exhibition is open until May 18, 2025.
The age limit is 0+.
