The court in the U.S. state of Delaware closed the case of illegal possession of weapons against the son of current U.S. President Joe Biden Hunter after his pardon. This was reported on December 4 by the Associated Press (AP).

It is specified that the case was officially closed a week before the scheduled date of sentencing. Hunter Biden could face a total of up to 25 years in prison for three felonies.

The dismissal of the case was opposed by prosecutors. In court documents cited by the AP, they argued that a pardon "should not reduce the case to nothing, as if it never happened."

Earlier on Dec. 1, Joe Biden, whose term expires in January, decided to pardon his son Hunter. He said he now intends to devote his life to helping people with addictions. In Biden Sr.'s opinion, his son was unfairly prosecuted, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said. However, the next day it became known that the oversight committee of the U.S. House of Representatives will continue to investigate Hunter Biden.

In September, Hunter Biden pleaded guilty to nine counts of criminal charges of non-payment of taxes, and in June - on three counts of weapons possession. The verdict in these cases was to be announced on December 12 and 16.
