Excessive consumption of food can lead to gastrointestinal tract (GIT) problems. This was told to "Gazeta.Ru" on December 4 by doctor-gastroenterologist, candidate of medical sciences, associate professor and head of the Department of Internal Medicine of the Institute of Fundamental Medicine and Biology of Kazan (Volga Region) Federal University Sayar Abdulkhakov.

According to the specialist, during overeating from stress people tend to consume more harmful products: fast food, food rich in fats and carbohydrates. This can provoke the development of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). In this case, spicy food irritates the mucous membrane of the stomach and esophagus, contributing to its inflammation, increases the secretion of hydrochloric acid in the stomach, causing GERD. The disease develops when the contents of the stomach or duodenum begin to enter the esophagus on a regular basis. The following symptoms appear: burning behind the sternum, acidic belching, pain along the course of the esophagus.

"Constant irritation of the esophageal mucosa can lead to serious consequences - the formation of erosions and ulcers in the esophagus," - said the doctor.

Abdulkhakov also emphasized that overeating can lead to excess weight gain and become an additional factor that provokes reflux (throwing the contents of the stomach or duodenum into the esophagus). At the same time, excess weight can be accompanied by a decrease in the function of the lower esophageal sphincter (the muscular structure that prevents acidic stomach contents from entering the esophagus).

"If overeating becomes regular and negatively affects the quality of life and the functioning of the body, it is worth seeking help from specialists, including a medical psychologist. It is desirable to control stress through relaxation techniques, mild exercise and breathing exercises that do not harm the GI tract," he said.

The expert urged to consult a doctor if a person has discomfort or pain behind the sternum during or after eating, when bending over or in a horizontal position. Going to the doctor is necessary in case of heartburn and burping with a sour taste. The above symptoms may indicate GERD.

"If not treated in time, GERD can lead to Barrett's esophagus and even adenocarcinoma (a type of cancer) of the esophagus. Therefore, it is extremely important to start treatment in time," Abdulkhakov concluded.

Earlier, December 2, associate professor of the Department of Gastroenterology of the Faculty of Advanced Medical Education of the Vladimirsky MONIKI Natalia Homeriki warned about the risk of contracting gastritis in the office. The specialist explained that the main cause of gastritis is Helicobacter pylori infection. For this reason, the disease is considered infectious.
