The South Korean currency won weakened sharply against the U.S. dollar, to 1,400 won per dollar, after the country's President Yun Seok-yol declared martial law emergency. This was reported by Yonhap News Agency on Dec. 3.

The local currency was quoted at 1.4 thousand won against the U.S. dollar at 3:30 p.m. ET, down 1.6 won from the previous session in offshore trading (onshore processes related to offshore oil, gas or condensate production).

The cryptocurrency market was also affected by the declaration of martial law. Bitcoin began to fall noticeably after the announcement, and as of 11:15 p.m. Korea time, it was down 2.65% from yesterday's value.

Earlier in the day, Korean President Yun Seok-yol declared martial law. The reason given was the threat of power paralysis due to attempts to conduct impeachment proceedings.

Later, the commander of the emergency regime, Chief of Staff of the Ground Forces Park Ahn Soo said that the activities of parliament, political parties and associations in South Korea are banned until the martial law is lifted. Eyewitnesses shared that protesters were gathering outside the National Assembly building in Seoul.
