International Volunteer Day is celebrated annually on December 5 in Russia and other countries. In 2024, it falls on Thursday. Read about the history and traditions of the holiday in the material "Izvestia".

Volunteer Day - 2024: the history of the holiday

International Volunteer Day was established by the UN General Assembly in 1985 as a way to recognize the contribution of people engaged in volunteer activities to the well-being of society and improve the lives of people in need around the world.

In Russia, this holiday has been officially celebrated since 2017 after President Vladimir Putin signed a decree establishing Volunteer Day. The main purpose of the celebration is to remind about the significance of volunteering for improving the well-being of society and protecting vulnerable people, as well as to attract people to actively participate in such initiatives.

Volunteering as a social movement originated from ancient times, when people helped each other on a voluntary basis without expecting material rewards. However, in its modern sense it began to take shape in the XIX century.

One of the significant milestones in the history of volunteering was the establishment of the International Red Cross in 1863 by Swiss Henri Dunant. The movement was based on the principles of helping the wounded in military conflicts, regardless of their side. This event gave rise to a multitude of humanitarian initiatives.

After the First and Second World Wars, the volunteer movement became international. Volunteers participated in the reconstruction of war-torn cities, medical and humanitarian operations. During this period, programs were also launched to help refugees, needy segments of the population, to develop education in poor countries. For example, in 1961 in the United States, on the initiative of President John F. Kennedy, the Peace Corps was established, specializing in sending volunteers to developing countries to work in education, health care, agriculture and other sectors.

In Russia, volunteerism has been actively developing since the early 2000s, when numerous public organizations and initiatives aimed at helping those in need were created. One of the most ambitious events for the Russian volunteer movement was the 2014 Sochi Olympics, in which thousands of volunteers took part.
