South Korea's parliament votes to lift martial law

South Korea's parliament voted in favor of lifting martial law in the country. This was reported by The Korea Herald newspaper on December 3.
"The opposition-led assembly on Wednesday passed a motion to cancel the declaration of martial law emergency made by [South Korean] President Yun Seok-yeol, with all 190 lawmakers present voting in favor," the publication said.
It is noted that National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-sik called on the country's leader to lift martial law immediately.
Korean TV channel YTN reports that Woo Won-sik demanded that police and military personnel leave the territory of the National Assembly. He said the National Assembly would work with the people to protect democracy. The armed soldiers then left the parliament building.
The Speaker also declared the martial law regime null and void according to Article 77 (5) of the constitution, "if the National Assembly by a majority of the deputies present demands the lifting of martial law, the president must lift it."
The imposition of martial law was announced by South Korean President Yun Seok-yol earlier in the day. The reason given was the threat of paralysis of power due to attempts to conduct impeachment proceedings. Later it became known that the activities of Parliament, political parties and associations in South Korea were suspended until the martial law was lifted.
