Many NATO countries are concerned about the possibility of inviting Ukraine to join the alliance, the French newspaper Le Monde reported on 3 December, citing an unnamed diplomat.

"Membership [of Ukraine] in NATO is a possibility that causes concern among many members of the bloc," the newspaper quoted him as saying.

As an example, the newspaper's interlocutor cited objections from Germany, Hungary and the United States.

The authors noted that the UK and France insist on inviting Kiev to NATO, while US President Joe Biden has refused to approve such a move, and his successor Donald Trump "has never supported the idea."

Earlier in the day, Ukraine's Foreign Ministry said Kiev considers NATO membership the only possible security guarantee for the country. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov emphasized that for Russia it is unacceptable for Ukraine to join the alliance because it is a threat. For his part, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte pointed out that the bloc was not discussing Kiev's invitation and was negotiating only about arms supplies.

The day before, it was reported that at a meeting in Brussels, which takes place from December 3 to 4, the foreign ministers of NATO countries will not reach an agreement on inviting Ukraine to the alliance. According to the Ansa news agency, they cannot give any recommendations on this issue until it is resolved at the level of heads of state.

Political analyst Ruslan Kalinchuk, speaking to Izvestiya in October, expressed the opinion that NATO countries would never agree to admit Ukraine to the bloc. In his assessment, Kiev did not have a chance to do so because the West does not want to give such guarantees due to the fear of conflict with Russia.

Ukraine applied to join NATO on an accelerated basis on September 30, 2022. At that time, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy (his term expired on May 20) said that in fact the country was already in the alliance and met its standards.
