Hungarian Foreign Minister calls EU calls to abandon Russian gas propaganda
Hungary has no alternative to gas supplies from Russia, and calls by European Union leaders to abandon it are political propaganda, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said at a hearing of the parliament's economic committee on December 3.
"Those who insist that we should not buy Russian gas either want to make money by selling us their more expensive gas or do not know what the map of energy transportation looks like in this part of the world," he said during the speech, a recording of which is posted on the minister's Facebook page (owned by the recognized extremist company Meta, its activities are banned in Russia).
Siyarto pointed out that the country receives Russian gas through the Turkish Stream pipeline and its branches through Bulgaria and Serbia.
The system of other pipelines in the region cannot supply a similar volume of gas, and the European Commission has refused to allocate funds for the modernization of infrastructure, the diplomat said.
Earlier, on November 27, Bloomberg agency predicted the coldest winter for Europe since the refusal of European countries from gas from Russia. According to the agency's estimates, energy prices are expected to rise and energy risks are expected to increase.
Before that, on November 21, the U.S. imposed sanctions against Gazprombank. Szijjártó then emphasized that the move threatens the energy security of Central Europe and Washington is deliberately acting in this way. He emphasized that Budapest considers it an infringement on sovereignty and will not give in to pressure.
In October, Gazprom head Alexei Miller said that Europe's policy on the gas market could lead to a new gas price shock and supply disruptions. He called the situation on the European gas market bad and agreed with the assessment that the demand for energy resources there is being destroyed purposefully.
