Media said the BRICS countries' desire to get rid of the dollar is growing because of Trump's threats

Threats of US President-elect Donald Trump to impose trade duties of 100% on the goods of BRICS countries will strengthen the desire of the members of the association to abandon the dollar. This statement was made on December 3 by the columnist of the Brazilian magazine O Cafezinho Miguel do Rosário.

On the introduction of duties of 100% for goods from BRICS member states, Trump announced on November 30. He noted that the measure would be adopted if the members of the association decide to create their own currency.

"He says that countries that dare to develop trade strategies independent of the dollar will no longer be able to sell goods to Americans. But in saying this, he is damaging the dollar itself," the piece said.

Du Rosariu noted that if the BRICS states cannot supply goods to the United States, they will have to sell products to other countries, which will help increase the likelihood of implementing trade agreements using local currencies.

He said Trump's threats to impose duties only reinforce "the need to develop safer trade spaces."

At the same time, the columnist said that the rhetoric of the US president-elect "in some ways looks like desperation" and his "tariff hysteria" causes a sense of pity.

Earlier, on December 1, the head of the Federation Council Commission on Information Policy Alexei Pushkov called the introduction of duties on goods of BRICS countries unrealizable in practice. According to him, this threat is unrealistic because the United States is economically dependent on globalization and imports.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on November 7 that two-thirds of Russia's trade turnover is serviced in national currencies, and with BRICS member countries it is already 88%. He also emphasized that the Russian side is not fighting the dollar. In response to the new trends in the development of the world economy, Moscow is thinking about the creation of new tools. The head of state also noted that Russia has never sought and does not seek to abandon the dollar.

BRICS is an interstate association of countries. The last summit at the level of heads of its member states was held in Kazan in October 2024.
