Abkhazian parliament votes against ratification of investment agreement with Russia

Deputies of the Abkhazian parliament voted against ratification of the agreement on investments of Russian legal entities in the republic, the website of the legislative body reported on December 3.

"Considered, but as a result of the vote was not adopted the draft law "On ratification of the agreement between the Government of the Republic of Abkhazia and the Government of the Russian Federation on the implementation of investment projects by Russian legal entities," - stated in the message.

It is specified that this issue was considered at an extraordinary session chaired by Speaker Lasha Ashuba.

Earlier, on November 20, the Abkhazian Foreign Ministry told Izvestia about plans to strengthen relations with Russia. The ministry called Russia a strategic ally of the republic.

In mid-November, clashes took place near the building of the Abkhazian State Security Service in Sukhum. Operatives detained several people, who were later released. On November 15, a protesters' truck broke down the fence gates around the parliament building, and some of the demonstrators got into the inner territory. The opposition clashed with police.

The head of the republic Aslan Bzhania resigned on November 19, the Abkhazian parliament accepted his resignation. Head of the government Alexander Ankvab also left his post, other ministers continued their work. Vice-President Badra Gunba became acting head of state.

In a conversation with Izvestia Bzhania called the protests in Abkhazia an attempt at a coup d'état. The politician noted that the protesters were not in the mood for negotiations and his resignation was necessary to stabilize the situation.
