Former film producer Harvey Weinstein, who suffers from leukemia, was urgently hospitalized from the prison on Rikers Island in New York to Bellevue Hospital. This was reported by TMZ on December 2.

Weinstein's lawyer Imran Ansari told the portal that the results of his blood test are worrisome, but doctors will be able to help him.

"[Weinstein] suffers from a lack of adequate medical care and lives in horrible and inhumane conditions on Rikers Island," Ansari told TMZ.

The attorney added that the ex-producer will remain at Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan until his condition stabilizes.

Earlier on November 27, Weinstein's defense filed a lawsuit against New York City over unsanitary conditions at the Rikers Island jail. Ansari then said that the ex-producer was not given clean underwear and provided substandard medical care.

NBC News reported that Weinstein, 72, was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia, a variant of bone marrow cancer. In addition, in September, the former movie producer underwent emergency surgery to remove a large amount of fluid that had accumulated in his lungs and heart. That same month, Weinstein was hospitalized for chest pains and on July 26 for pneumonia from a coronavirus.

Weinstein has been in jail since a number of actresses, including Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow and Salma Hayek, accused him of harassment in 2017. According to the victims, he induced the actresses into intimacy by promising assistance with career advancement. Amid the scandal, Weinstein was fired from his own company, and the authorities of the state of New York began an investigation against him.

On March 11, 2020, a court in New York sentenced Weinstein to 23 years in prison on two counts of rape and forced sex. Six women testified against him in court. In February 2023, he was sentenced to another 16 years in prison because of another rape charge. Later, on September 5, 2024, the former movie producer was acquitted of charges of indecent assault on a woman in 1996.
