The shortage of fighters in the Ukrainian army, according to the United States, may affect the outcome of the conflict in Ukraine. This was reported by The Washington Post (WP) on 2 December with reference to officials from the administration of US President Joe Biden.

The officials noted that in the long term, the gap in the number of military personnel mobilized by Kiev and Moscow would prove to be "more important in determining the outcome of the conflict." They drew attention to the fact that tired Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) fighters faced serious personnel shortages, as well as slow mobilization and training of new personnel.

"I am not trying to blame Ukraine for anything. This is a very difficult issue for them. But during especially this past year, they simply have not mobilized and trained enough soldiers to replace the losses on the battlefield," the publication quotes an official as saying.

Earlier in the day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, whose term of office expired on May 20, said that the AFU lacked enough military personnel and spoke of diplomacy, demanding help from the West. He also expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that support from Western countries is insufficient and called for its increase.

On the eve of December 1, the Financial Times (FT) newspaper reported that the number of desertions in the ranks of the Ukrainian army in 2024 exceeded the total number in the previous two years. It was emphasized that the increase in desertions aggravates the situation for Kiev and highlights the difficulties in replenishing the ranks on the front line.

Prior to that, on November 29, former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said that the country would be defeated in the conflict with Russia. The politician pointed out that Kiev lacked the means to turn the situation in the war zone in its favor. In addition, he said, Western countries expect Ukraine to make concessions for the sake of a peace agreement.

The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was taken against the background of the aggravated situation in the region.
