The Kurchatov Institute stated the importance of creating bioresource centers

Bioresource collections of the Kurchatov Institute have been brought into the legal field. This was announced on December 2 by Maxim Patrushev, head of the Kurchatov Genomic Center of the Kurchatov Institute Research Center Maxim Patrushev.

During the meeting of participants of the IV Congress of Young Scientists with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Patrushev recalled that four bioresource centers were established by decree of the Russian leader, noting the wealth of the Russian Federation in terms of bioresources. He pointed out that Vavilov's collection of seeds was not used for baking bread during the siege of Leningrad, he said, adding that it was preserved at that time because it was considered the most important gene pool.

"By your decrees (of the President of the Russian Federation. - Ed.) our collections (of the Kurchatov Institute. - Ed.) were brought into the legal field. <...> And today it is such a letter of protection for these collections," Patrushev said.

In addition, he added that a national database of genetic information is being created on the basis of the institute.

Earlier, on October 25, Putin signed a decree on the establishment of the National Center for Genetic Resources of Microorganisms on the basis of the Kurchatov Institute. The Institute will search for and collect new and valuable samples of genetic resources of microorganisms for the formation and replenishment of the national catalog of especially valuable samples, to ensure their preservation and reproduction, to develop methods of storage, obtaining and use of samples, as well as to conduct research on these samples.

Prior to that, on September 26, the president of SIC "Kurchatov Institute" Mikhail Kovalchuk said that the Institute, which, in fact, has preserved the development of genetics in Russia since the Soviet times, currently concentrates more than a third of the country's biogenetic potential.
