In the Moscow region identified 223 residential nests of white stork, listed in the Red Book of the region. This is reported by the press service of the regional Ministry of Ecology on Monday, December 2.
In most of the identified nests stork pairs bred their offspring - from two to five chicks. Most of all nests were found in Mozhaisk - 69. On 47 nests found in Lotoshino and Volokolamsk, writes the online edition of "Podmoskovye Segodnya".
According to the bairdwatchers who were counting, in fact, the white stork began to nest in the Moscow region only about half a century ago. Since then, the grouping of these birds has been increasing, developing the region from west to east.
Observations were made by participants of the project "White Stork in the Moscow Region", which is implemented as part of the program "Birds of Moscow and Moscow Region". It unites bird lovers at the Zoological Museum of Moscow University. Monitoring of feathered birds continues.
Earlier in December it was reported that a rare species of river bird - the teal whistler - was spotted in St. Petersburg on Yelagin Island. The feathered bird got its name for the ringing whistle it emits in spring during mating games.
