Russian President Vladimir Putin held a telephone conversation with Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian, the conversation focused on the worsening situation in Syria. This was reported in the Kremlin on December 2.

"The main attention was paid to the aggravated situation in the Syrian Arab Republic. The large-scale aggression of terrorist groups and gangs is regarded as aimed at undermining the sovereignty, political and socio-economic stability of the Syrian state," the Kremlin said in a statement on its website.

The presidents expressed unconditional support for the steps of the legitimate leadership of Syria, which is working to restore constitutional order and territorial integrity of the state. In addition, Putin and Pezeshkian emphasized the importance of coordinating joint actions within the Astana format, in which Turkey participates.

The presidents discussed the development of partnership between Moscow and Tehran in various sectors, taking into account the agreements Putin and Pezeshkian reached at their meeting in Kazan at the BRICS summit on October 23. In addition, the presidents outlined a plan for subsequent contacts, including at other levels.

The Kremlin specified that the conversation took place at the initiative of the Iranian side.

Earlier in the day, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said after talks with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araqchi that Ankara, Tehran and Moscow are going to hold a meeting in the Astana format on the situation in Syria in the near future. Fidan pointed out that it is very important for Damascus that the participants in the meeting express their views sincerely.

On the same day, the Syrian army's General Command said that the Arab republic's military together with Russia's Air and Space Forces (AFS) eliminated more than 400 terrorists in Aleppo and Idlib provinces. The militaries of the two countries continue to carry out missile and air strikes on the positions of Islamist groups. On December 1, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad emphasized that the Arab republic is capable of defeating terrorists with the help of allies and friends and will do it with the language of force.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi called the activation of terrorists in Syria part of the US plan against the backdrop of Israel's defeat in Lebanon. In turn, the White House denied its involvement in what is happening. In addition, Britain, the United States, France and Germany called on all parties in Syria to de-escalate.
