Fighters of the Russian Army's "North" group of troops have defeated formations of 11 mechanized and assault brigades of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) near settlements in the border areas of Kursk Region. This was reported by the Russian Defense Ministry on December 2.

"The units of the "North" group of forces defeated the formations of the 5th Tank Brigade, 17th Heavy Mechanized, 21st, 41st, 44th and 47th Mechanized, 80th, 82nd and 95th Airborne Assault Brigades, as well as the 112th and 129th brigades of the AFU territorial defense in the areas of Alexandria, Viktorovka, Lebedevka, Leonidovo, Malaya Loknya, Martynovka, Nikolayevo-Daryino, Nikolsky, Novaya Sorochina, Novoivanovka, Plekhovo and Sverdlikovo," the ministry said.

The AFU lost more than 250 soldiers, a tank, two vehicles, an infantry fighting vehicle (IFV), four mortars and two armored combat vehicles (ACV) in the Kursk region over the day. In addition, one Ukrainian soldier surrendered to the Russian Armed Forces (AF).

During the entire period of fighting in the Kursk region, Ukraine has lost over 37,300 military personnel, 226 tanks, 305 artillery pieces, 1,206 armored combat vehicles (ACVs), 161 infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs), 27 units of engineering equipment and a large number of other weapons, including Western-made ones.

Earlier in the day, fighters from a reconnaissance group of the 177th Marine Regiment told Izvestia that they were cutting off the AFU's supply routes in the border areas of Kursk Region. All military reconnaissance groups have a very high level of combat training. Moving stealthily and silently, the fighters found a point where Ukrainian army fighters had entrenched themselves, and then fired 20 shells at the place.

On the same day, the Russian Defense Ministry showed how servicemen of the engineering and demolition unit of the "North" group of troops destroy unexploded ammunition of the AFU in the border area of the Kursk region. The sappers check the area step by step, removing ammunition warheads and other dangerous parts from the funnels. In addition, they destroyed an unexploded NATO-style shell on the spot.

Ukrainian militants attacked Russian positions in the border areas of the Kursk region on August 6. The situation in the region was recognized as a state of emergency of federal character. The liquidation of the AFU units invading the Russian territory is underway.

The special operation to protect Donbass, the beginning of which was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was taken against the background of the aggravated situation in the region.
