There is a possibility that Washington will make a real attempt to start negotiations and meetings on the settlement of the Ukrainian crisis in 2025. This was stated by Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko on 2 December.

According to her, the loud statements made during the election campaign of US President-elect Donald Trump have subsided, but this does not mean that the new White House administration will abandon the Ukrainian issue. This is confirmed by Trump's recent appointment of a special envoy for Ukraine, which was former national security aide Keith Kellogg.

"I think the likelihood that there will be a real attempt to start such negotiations and meetings in 2025 is much higher than the likelihood that no such attempt will be made. This, I repeat, is my personal prediction. What will happen next - we'll see," Matviyenko said in an interview with aif.ru.

Earlier, on November 22, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said that Trump has every opportunity to end the conflict because Washington has all the tools to stop hostilities. He noted that Moscow does not rely on Trump or anyone else in the Ukrainian issue.

Prior to that, on Nov. 14, Trump promised to "work very hard" to end the conflict in Ukraine.

The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on February 24, 2022, is ongoing. The decision was made against the backdrop of the worsening situation in the region.
