The protests in Georgia are a clear attempt to sway the situation in the country, which is reminiscent of the Maidan in Ukraine. This was stated by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on December 2.

"There is a clear attempt to rock the situation. We have seen similar events in a number of countries. The most direct parallel that can be drawn is the events of the Maidan in Ukraine. All signs of an attempt to carry out the Orange Revolution," Peskov said.

He added that what is happening in Georgia is an internal matter of the country, in which the Russian Federation does not interfere. The authorities of the Transcaucasian republic are taking all measures to stabilize the situation.

On November 28, the ruling Georgian Dream party decided to suspend discussions with the European Union (EU) on starting negotiations on joining the union until 2028. On the same day, a wave of protests erupted in the country, and they have continued for the fourth day. On November 30, the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of Georgia reported that demonstrators attempted to set fire to the parliament building, 48 rooms were damaged.

Later, on December 2, Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said that Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania had agreed to impose sanctions against those involved in the suppression of protests in Georgia. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin, commenting on this, said that Moscow views negatively any attempts to interfere in the internal affairs of sovereign states. He added that the Baltic republics' move demonstrates the Western atmosphere of intolerance towards the countries' aspirations to pursue an independent policy.

Before that, on May 14, the Georgian parliament adopted the law on foreign agents in the third and final reading. The situation around the law provoked a wave of protests. At the time, the European Commission noted that its adoption would have a negative impact on the country's integration into the EU.
