The current US President Joe Biden decided to pardon his son Hunter in two criminal cases: non-payment of taxes and possession of weapons. This is stated in a statement by the White House press service on Sunday, December 1.

"Today I signed my son Hunter's pardon. From the day I took office, I said I would not interfere with the Justice Department's decision-making, and I have kept my word, even as I watched my son selectively and unfairly prosecuted," Biden said in the statement.

The president noted that cases like Hunter's are usually resolved with more lenient measures, but his "opponents in Congress" have used the allegations against Biden's presidency. He emphasized that his son was targeted solely because of political pressure.

He noted that he made the decision to pardon his son over the Thanksgiving weekend.

Earlier, on December 1, Hunter Biden's lawyers said about the threat to his future because of Trump's victory. "There is no question that Trump referred to Hunter as a member of his enemies list," they said. Members of his team also said Trump "could turn revenge on prosecutors" if they don't take a tougher stance.

Before that, on October 24, Trump - then a presidential candidate - admitted that he could pardon Hunter Biden after his victory. According to the politician, he is able to take such a step, although he himself was severely persecuted by the current authorities.

In September, Hunter Biden pleaded guilty to nine counts of criminal charges of non-payment of taxes, and in June - on three counts of weapons possession.
