The Council of Federation assessed Trump's threats about duties for BRICS

The statements of newly elected US President Donald Trump to impose duties of 100% on goods from BRICS countries (BRICS) are unrealizable in practice. This was stated on Sunday, December 1, by Alexei Pushkov, head of the Federation Council Commission on Informational Policy.

"Donald Trump is peculiar to pretend as if he is able to solve all acute political and economic problems with one decisive step, conversation or a formidable ultimatum. <...> Now he sounds super resolute: he threatens to impose 100% duties on goods from the BRICS countries if they refuse the dollar," he wrote in his Telegram channel.

According to Pushkov, this threat is unrealistic because the US is economically dependent on globalization and imports. He also noted that Washington is powerless to prevent the BRICS countries from switching to settlements in national currencies and creating an alternative SWIFT payment system.

The day before, Trump said that in case the BRICS countries decide to create their own new currency, Washington will impose a duty of 100% for goods from the states belonging to this association. According to him, any state that intends to try to create a replacement for the dollar in the world economy will no longer be able to interact with the United States in this area.

Earlier, on October 27, Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov said that the creation of a payment system of the BRICS member countries is a vital necessity, as an alternative to the system that "fails" is needed.

Prior to that, on November 7, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that two-thirds of Russia's trade turnover is serviced in national currencies, and with BRICS member countries it is already 88%. He also emphasized that the Russian side is not fighting the dollar. In response to the new trends in the development of the world economy, Moscow is thinking about the creation of new tools. The head of state also noted that Russia has never sought and does not seek to abandon the dollar.
