The return of US President-elect Donald Trump to the White House should make Europe grow up. This statement was made on November 30 by Josep Borrell, who completed his five-year service as European Union (EU) High Representative.

"Trump's return should make Europe grow up once and for all," he said in an interview with La Razón.

With Trump, Borrell said, Europe must "act together and not allow itself to be divided." He noted that the US president-elect's approach - "America First" - is damaging to European peace.

Borrel also recalled that Trump promised to raise import duties, which among other things will hurt the countries of Europe.

Earlier, on November 28, a member of the French Parliament Christophe Blanchet sent an appeal to the government that Trump's accession to power is fraught with energy problems for the EU. According to him, this includes the area of pricing. Blanchet emphasized that the EU depends on energy imports by 62%.

Before that, on November 20, The Washington Post (WP) reported that the trade duties, which the US president-elect is going to introduce, could cause serious damage to the EU countries. According to economists, "protectionist measures of Trump" may entail further recession in Europe and complicate relations between allies.

On November 6, it became known that the European Union fears that after the election of Trump may start a new trade war between the countries of the association and Washington. It was specified that in 2018, as President of the United States, the Republican for reasons of national security introduced a duty on steel at a rate of 7% and a tariff on imports of aluminum at a rate of 10%.
