The doctor gave advice on strengthening immunity in winter

In winter, it is important to strengthen the immune system in order not to catch a cold. Rosanna Gardashnik, chief physician of the European Medical Center (EMC), told Izvestia on December 1 about how to do it.
"In the season of acute respiratory viral infections, we are primarily protected by nonspecific immunity: a natural barrier on the mucous membranes. To keep it in good working condition, the body needs a sufficient amount of fluid. Therefore, in cold weather it is very important to continue to observe a drinking regimen, "- said the doctor. The second important point is the presence of sufficient antioxidants in the body. They neutralize free radicals that weaken the immune system.
"The main antioxidant in the human body is glutathione. To maintain and increase its level in the diet you need to add foods containing sulfur (garlic and onions, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli), vitamin C (sea buckthorn berries, pomegranate, sauerkraut), alpha-lipoic acid (offal and liver), curcumin (turmeric spice)," states Gardashnik.
In addition, the specialist advises to adhere to the norm of protein intake in the diet. In the cold season, ginger is useful for strengthening the immune system, as its root is rich in the antioxidant gingerol and helps normalize the gastrointestinal tract, which greatly affects the functioning of the immune system. However, ginger, as well as other spicy foods, is not recommended to be consumed before going out in the cold, as it raises the body temperature and the body experiences significant stress due to the sudden change in temperature.
Algae, sea foods, fish and other sources of iodine help to strengthen the immune system. Iodine plays an important role in the functioning of the thyroid gland, which in turn affects the production of substances involved in immune processes, as well as thermoregulation. Instead of regular salt, you can use iodized salt, but it is important to take into account that in contact with moisture and storage in open packaging, the iodine in the salt is quickly destroyed. To preserve the beneficial properties, it is worth storing salt in an airtight container in a dry place, advised the doctor
"Additional recommendations for maintaining immunity are standard: normal level of physical activity, minimizing stress and compliance with the sleep regime," - summed up Gardashnik.
Earlier, on November 27, the doctor-nutritionist Daria Rusanova told about what products strengthen immunity and protect against acute respiratory viral infections. The doctor advised to consume products with prebiotics - fruits, vegetables, greens, legumes, mushrooms and whole-grain products.
