December 2 - Bank Worker's Day in Russia: history, traditions, congratulations

Every year on December 2, employees of financial and credit institutions in Russia celebrate their professional holiday - Bankers' Day. In 2024, it falls on a Monday. Read about the history of the celebration and its traditions in Izvestia.
Day of the Bank Worker - 2024: the history of the holiday
Day of the Bank Worker in Russia was established relatively recently. The Association of Russian Banks (ARB) came up with a corresponding initiative in 2004. This choice was not accidental: on December 2, 1990 the laws "On the Central Bank of the Russian Federation" and "On Banks and Banking Activities" were adopted, which became an important milestone in the formation of the modern banking system of Russia.
The domestic history of banking dates back to the 18th century. In 1733, during the reign of Empress Anna Ioannovna, the first attempt was made to establish an official bank in the Russian Empire - the Coin Office, which provided loans to merchants and nobles against the security of real estate and goods.
In 1754, by order of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna, two large state banks were established: the Noble Bank in Moscow and the Merchant Bank in St. Petersburg. The first was intended to issue loans to the nobility, and the second gave loans to representatives of the merchant class, thus stimulating the development of trade. In 1786 on their basis was created a single State Loan Bank.
In the middle of the XIX century began the active development of joint-stock commercial banks, as well as those that were focused on financing certain sectors of the economy. These institutions provided loans to individuals and enterprises, which contributed to the growth of the economy.
After the October Revolution of 1917, the Russian banking system was nationalized. All private institutions that were part of it were abolished and their assets were transferred to the State Bank of the RSFSR. During the NEP period, elements of a market economy were temporarily allowed, including the creation of cooperative and commercial financial organizations, but under strict state control.
With the collapse of the USSR, another restructuring of the country's banking system took place. In 1990, the Central Bank of the Russian Federation was established, privatization and liberalization of the economy began, which became the basis for the creation of a modern market banking system.
Bankers' Day - 2024: traditions of celebration
Bankers' Day is celebrated by both large banks and small regional financial institutions across the country. The main traditions of the celebration include ceremonial meetings, during which it is customary to award the most successful employees, present diplomas, certificates and awards for achievements in work, as well as festive evenings and concerts.
