A group of deputies of the European Parliament has expressed regret over the decision of the Georgian government to freeze negotiations on EU membership until 2028. This follows from the EP statement.

"The European Parliament regrets that Georgia, a candidate country for EU accession, held parliamentary elections on October 26, 2024 that did not meet international standards, <...> its EU accession process has since been de facto suspended due to the course of action taken by the Georgian government since spring 2024," the text reads.

The text of the statement also condemns "the use of violence against peaceful demonstrators."

The day before, on November 28, the ruling Georgian Dream party decided to suspend discussions with the EU on opening accession talks with the union until 2028. As Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze specified, Georgia should show European bureaucrats that it should talk to them "not with blackmail and insults, but with dignity".

Meanwhile, protests continued in Tbilisi over the suspension of negotiations on European integration. Protesters oppose the decision to postpone negotiations with the European Union (EU). The Georgian Interior Ministry reported that 32 police officers required medical assistance after the unrest broke out in front of the parliament building.

Relations between Georgia and the EU became more complicated after May 14, when the Georgian parliament adopted the law on foreign agents in the third and final reading. The situation around the law provoked a wave of protests. The EC and the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell said in a joint statement that the adoption of the law on foreign agents by the Georgian authorities would have a negative impact on the country's integration into the European Union.
