Lavrov names conditions for long-term peace in Ukraine

Long-term peace in Ukraine can be achieved only after all conditions for ensuring Russia's security are met. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said this at a meeting with the heads of diplomatic missions accredited in Moscow at the embassy round table on Friday, November 29.
"No information wars, lies and fakes will help the neo-Nazi Kiev regime. The goals and objectives of the special military operation (SMO) will be realized. At the same time, as [Russian President Vladimir] Putin has repeatedly emphasized, we invariably give preference to peaceful, political and diplomatic means," he said.
Lavrov noted that any peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine would be unstable and short-lived if its root causes are not eliminated: NATO's eastward expansion and the alliance's attempts to take over Ukraine, which poses a long-term threat to Russia's security.
According to the foreign minister, another root cause is the policy of the Kiev authorities aimed at suppressing the rights of the Russian-speaking population by banning education and media in the Russian language.
The day before, Putin said during his approach to journalists in Astana that Russia was ready for talks on Ukraine on the previous terms. He noted that at the moment there are no preconditions for Russia to start negotiations on Kiev, but there are conditions for peace. The Russian leader added that the principled attitude towards the settlement of the situation in Ukraine had not changed even with the appearance of new weapons systems in Russia.
The last round of talks between Russia and Ukraine took place in Istanbul on March 29, 2022. They lasted about three hours. Later, Kiev officially refused contacts with Moscow. On October 4 of the same year, Zelensky introduced the decision of the National Security and Defense Council of the country about the impossibility of holding talks with Putin.
