Vienna sausage shops have been included in the list of intangible cultural heritage of UNESCO. This was announced by the authorities of the Austrian capital on Thursday, November 28.

"Würstelstand, whose history goes back generations, is more than just a source of greasy gastronomic pleasure," the Associated Press reported.

They added that the tradition of sausage shops dates back to the Austro-Hungarian Empire before World War I, when former soldiers opened mobile taverns to earn a living. Before that, Viennese coffee shops and wine taverns had already made the list.

"Vienna's sausage shops, which have been part of the city's landscape for generations, have been officially inscribed on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage," the government said in a statement.

Earlier, UNESCO inscribed the ruins of the city of Jericho in Palestine as a World Heritage Site on September 18, 2023. The inclusion took place at the 45th session of UNESCO in Riyadh.
