A pillow is one of the key elements of a healthy sleep. The right choice of pillow helps support the spine, relieves neck and back tension and promotes comfortable awakening. A doctor-traumatologist, orthopedist of JSC "Medicine" (clinic of academician Roitberg) told "Izvestia" on November 30 about what to pay attention to when choosing a pillow.

According to the specialist, an important aspect in choosing a pillow is the posture in which people sleep.

"For sleeping on the stomach, a pillow of medium height and stiffness is better suited, which will better support the muscles of the neck. On the side, it is better to sleep on higher and denser pillows so that they can fill the space between the shoulder and the head," states Malykhin.

According to him, orthopedic pillows that differ in anatomical shape and fillers such as latex or memory-foam deserve special attention.

"When choosing an orthopedic pillow, check for quality and material certificates. Memory-foam should return to its original position after pressing, and latex should be durable and well ventilated," said the expert.

The choice of filler is another key point, says the expert. Memory-foam perfectly adapts to the contours of the body and evenly distributes the load, which provides maximum comfort. Latex is durable, retains its shape and has good breathability. For people with a predisposition to allergies, pillows with hypoallergenic synthetic fillings such as hollofiber or silicone fibers are suitable. At the same time, down and feather models, although soft, are not always able to provide the necessary support and can accumulate dust.

"In addition to the filler, other factors are important: the ability to wash, the shape of the pillow, matching the size of the mattress and, of course, the price. <...> Not only comfort during sleep, but also well-being during the day depends on a successful choice," summarized Malykhin.

Earlier, on November 23, psychotherapist of the network of clinics "Semeynaya" Armenuya Arakelyan told "Izvestia" about the causes of the feeling of constant fatigue and ways to eliminate the problem. According to her, if the quantity and quality of sleep is sufficient, then perhaps the problem is rest, for example, it is worth taking a vacation at work.
