The issue of construction of a nuclear power plant (NPP) in Kazakhstan was discussed in a closed and extended part of the negotiations in Astana. This was stated on November 27 by Alexei Likhachev, head of state corporation Rosatom, in an interview with the TV program "Vremya" on Channel One.

"Today, time was devoted to the issue of nuclear power plant construction both in the closed (part of the talks. - Ed.) and at the extended talks," he said.

Likhachev, who is part of the Russian delegation accompanying Russian President Vladimir Putin on a state visit to Astana, also pointed to active consultations on various aspects of nuclear power plant construction in Kazakhstan.

Earlier, on October 7, the CEC of Kazakhstan disclosed the preliminary results of the referendum on NPP construction. According to Natalia Budarina, a member of the mission of the CEC Secretary, the referendum was held in accordance with the legislation of Kazakhstan.

On the eve, October 6, Kazakhstan held a national referendum on the construction of the country's first nuclear power plant, which want to build on the shores of Lake Balkhash by 2035. President of the Republic Kasym-Jomart Tokayev said that the construction of the plant in Kazakhstan should be entrusted to an international consortium.

Prior to that, August 5, Kazakh Deputy Energy Minister Zhandos Nurmaganbetov said that the country also thought about building a second nuclear power plant on the Irtysh River near the city of Kurchatov. He said that if Kazakhstan is really taking the path of carbon neutrality, it simply has no other choice but to build several plants.
