- Zakharova assessed the possibility of improving relations with Romania after the elections

Forecasts on the warming of relations between Russia and Romania after the election of the Romanian president are premature. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said this on November 27, answering Izvestia's question at a briefing.
"It is premature to give or make any forecasts in this regard. It is necessary to get acquainted with the program of this candidate (Calin Georgescu, who is leading in the first round - Ed.), and most importantly - with the real steps of the forces that will come to power," she said.
According to Zakharova, much will depend on the real readiness of the next president of Romania to abandon the anti-Russian course, which harms the country itself.
At the same time, the diplomat called it obvious that the results of the first round of voting in Romania reflect the disappointment of its people with the policy of the current authorities.
Earlier, on November 25, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov also did not give a forecast on how Georgescu's possible victory in the Romanian presidential election could affect relations between Bucharest and Moscow. He pointed to the unfriendly stance of the current Romanian leadership and added that the Kremlin will keep an eye on further developments.
The first round of the Romanian presidential election took place on Sunday, November 24. According to official data, independent candidate Calin Georgescu is leading with 22.94% of the vote. The leader of the opposition party "Union for the Salvation of Romania" Elena Lasconi has 19.17% of votes. The second round of voting will be held on December 8, as none of the candidates managed to get more than 50%.
Commenting on these results, political analyst Ruslan Andreev expressed the opinion that Georgescu's victory in the first round may harm Ukraine and weaken the position of the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. He pointed out that Georgescu is called a little Donald Trump: the politician is notable for his anti-globalization rhetoric and criticizes the West's involvement in the Ukrainian conflict.
