Marine infantry officially appeared in the Russian state in the XVIII century: November 27 (November 16, O.S.) Emperor Peter I issued a decree on the formation of a "regiment of sea soldiers". The first marines were officers and soldiers of the Semyonovsky and Preobrazhensky regiments. The first marines mainly participated in sea boardings and landings in the Baltic, and the sea soldiers served exclusively on sailing ships.
Over the several centuries of its existence, the Marine Corps was regularly reorganized. It was abolished, reformed and revived as the need arose based on where the hostilities took place - on land or sea. The Marine Corps has long been a combat branch of the military, designed primarily for amphibious operations.
Marine infantry fighters were among the strongest in the Russian army. Their detachments participated in the Russian-Turkish wars of the late 18th century, in the Mediterranean campaign of Admiral Fyodor Ushakov and in many other important battles. The assistance of marines was highly appreciated during the Crimean (Eastern) War of 1853-1856. Then, during the defense of Sevastopol, marine infantry units were urgently formed to defend the city.
At the beginning of the XX century the Marine infantry was decided to be transferred to the status of permanent units. In August 1914 in Kronstadt were created three battalions from the personnel of the Guards Fleet Crew and the 1st Baltic Fleet Crew. At the same time battalions of the Black Sea Fleet began to be formed. However, they were eventually disbanded before other military actions began.

The Marine Infantry fought heroically during the Great Patriotic War. Its units participated in the defense of Moscow, Leningrad, Odessa, Sevastopol, Polar Regions, Stalingrad and other important cities. For their black overcoats and bravery, opponents called the Marines "black death" and "black devils". After the end of the war, tens of thousands of Marines were awarded honorary orders and medals for their heroism, and more than 150 were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.
In 1956, during the reorganization of the USSR Armed Forces, the Marine Corps units were disbanded, but in 1963 the command revived them finally. In 1995, the holiday of marines was officially established by the order of Navy Commander-in-Chief Felix Gromov.
