"Georgian Dream nominates Kavelashvili for the post of president


The ruling Georgian Dream party has nominated former footballer and MP Mikhail Kavelashvili for the post of president. This was reported by 1tv.ge TV channel on Wednesday, November 27.
Georgian Dream founder Bidzin Ivanishvili presented the candidate. He noted that thanks to his soccer career the former athlete has repeatedly defended the honor of the country, so he is a good candidate.
Mikhail Kavelashvili is a former forward of the national soccer team. He became the champion of Georgia three times. In 2009 he became the founder and honorary president of the World Football Union (FIFPro) in Georgia.
Presidential elections in Georgia will be held on December 14, and the inauguration of the new state leader will take place on December 29.
The day before, political scientist Gleb Belyakov also pointed to the possibility of the Georgian Dream de facto appointing a president. He specified that the president will be elected by an electoral college of 300 people: 150 members of parliament (Georgian Dream has 89 seats) and 150 members of local authorities.
In October, parliamentary elections were held in Georgia, which were won by the Georgian Dream. The incumbent Georgian leader Salome Zurabishvili did not recognize the results of the vote, she was supported in this by three opposition political forces - United National Movement, Coalition for Change and Strong Georgia.
In 2017, Georgia officially abandoned the mixed system and became a parliamentary republic in which the president performs representative functions.
