On November 26, deputies of the State Duma (GD) passed in the first reading a bill on renaming the city of Rostov in Yaroslavl region to Rostov the Great.

The bill was supported by the State Duma Committee on Regional Policy and Local Self-Government, the Russian government, the Federation Council Committees on Budgets and Financial Markets and on Federal Structure, Regional Policy, Local Self-Government and Northern Affairs.

Rostov Veliky is the historical name of the city, a mention of which dates back to 862.

It follows from the explanatory note to the bill that the historical name is widely known both in the past and in the present. Including it was spread not only in publicist and scientific reference literature, but also in everyday life.

As specified by TASS, the city will be renamed at the expense of the budget of the Yaroslavl region.

The Russian government supported the draft federal law on renaming Rostov on August 26. Yaroslavl Region Governor Mikhail Evraev called it another big step in the issue of restoring historical justice.
