- The Chinese embassy commented on Trump's plans to impose additional duties on goods from China

China believes that neither side can win the trade war. Thus, on November 26, Liu Pengyu, spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in the United States, commented on the statement of the American president-elect Donald Trump about his intention to impose additional duties on Chinese goods.
"China believes that China-US economic and trade cooperation is inherently mutually beneficial. No one will win a trade war or a duty war," the diplomat wrote on his social media page X.
He said maintaining counter-narcotics cooperation is one of the important agreements reached by Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden at a meeting in San Francisco in 2023, after which Chinese and US services resumed regular contacts.
"China is responding to US requests to check evidence in certain cases and taking action. All of this proves that the notion that China knowingly allows fentanyl precursors to enter the United States is completely contrary to facts and reality," the spokesman concluded.
Earlier on Nov. 25, Trump said he would impose additional 10 percent duties on goods from China and 25 percent duties on all products from Mexico and Canada. In posts on his social media network Truth, Trump said China had failed to fulfill a promise to impose the death penalty on fentanyl traffickers, causing "drugs to flood" into the U.S. - mostly through Mexico - on an unprecedented scale.
Earlier on Nov. 17, Chinese President Xi Jinping said at a meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden that China is ready to work with the Trump administration. The heads of state met on the sidelines of the annual Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit.
Before that, on November 4, Bloomberg reported that American entrepreneur Ilon Musk could become a key mediator between Washington and Beijing if Trump wins. It is in the PRC that half of all Tesla cars are manufactured. Beijing grants the company certain freedoms and incentives to operate in China. For business benefit, Musk has expressed his opposition to US duties on Chinese electric cars, in contrast to Trump's position of wanting to impose a 60% tariff on all goods from China.
