- French Defense Minister says plans to supply Kiev with weapons at the expense of revenues from Russian assets

France intends to supply Ukraine with anti-aircraft missiles and other weapons by means of proceeds from frozen Russian assets. This was announced by French Armed Forces Minister Sebastien Lecornu after the talks of the defense ministers of Germany, the UK, Italy, Poland and France, which were held in Germany on 25 November.
Lecornu said that France will continue to support Ukraine.
"French taxpayers will be pleased to know that we have found new options to finance our support for Ukraine. In the coming weeks, we will take measures in this direction, in particular we will supply Kiev with Mistral air defense missiles, as well as other weapons, including jointly with Italy, from the proceeds of frozen Russian assets," Anadolu Ajansı news agency quoted the French defense minister as saying.
Earlier, on November 25, Pistorius said that the NATO aid coordination mission for Ukraine would begin in January 2025. According to him, the West's goal is to enable Ukraine to act from a position of strength.
On November 12, Kaja Kallas, a candidate for the post of European Union (EU) diplomatic chief and former Estonian prime minister, said that the transfer of assets to Russia was legal. She noted that Russia has the possibility to demand its assets back as part of the agreement, but added that "given what is happening," she doubted that "anything is left."
Before that, on November 7, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (his term expired on May 20) called Russian assets frozen by the West as Ukrainian money. He also urged to find a mechanism to transfer them to Kiev as soon as possible.
On October 23, the EU Council approved a €35bn loan to Ukraine with repayment from Russia's frozen assets. It was specified that it is the EU's contribution to the G7 loan of up to €45bn. The loan will have a maximum repayment period of 45 years.
Western countries have increased military and financial support for Kiev against the background of the special operation of the Russian Federation to protect Donbass, the start of which was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 24, 2022, after the aggravation of the situation in the region due to shelling by the Ukrainian military. The EU soon approved the decision to freeze the assets of the Russian Central Bank.
