Chest pain can have many causes, and each of them is characterized by its own peculiarities, which helps doctors more accurately determine the source of the problem. For example, angina pectoris, which occurs in cardiovascular disorders, is manifested by sharp pain that often begins during intense physical activity - when taking a quick step, climbing stairs or other activity. More about the causes of chest pain "Izvestia" on November 27, told the doctor-cardiologist of JSC "Medicine" (clinic of Academician Roitberg), Candidate of Medical Sciences Denis Sokolov.

"Some inflammatory heart diseases are also accompanied by chest pain. For example, myocarditis causes dull pain sensations in the central part of the chest or on the left side of the chest, while in pericarditis there is more intense pain and a feeling of heaviness that makes breathing difficult," he explained.

A number of diseases of the respiratory system, such as bronchitis, pneumonia or tuberculosis, can also cause pain in the chest area, the doctor clarified.

"Digestive problems can also contribute to this. In gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), irritation of the esophageal mucosa occurs due to the ingestion of acidic stomach contents, which causes bloating, discomfort and pain in the underbelly and in the left side of the chest. Hernia of the esophageal opening of the diaphragm, as a rule, goes unnoticed, but in some cases causes aching or burning pain behind the sternum and in the stomach area," Sokolov noted.

According to him, another common cause of pain is osteochondrosis of the thoracic or cervical spine. With this disease, the pain can spread to the shoulder blade, shoulder or arm and resemble a heart attack. With intercostal neuralgia, the pain is usually localized in one intercostal space and has the character of a shooting pain.

"Some drugs, such as those containing sodium bicarbonate and a number of antacids, can also cause pain in the thoracic region as a side effect," the specialist pointed out.

Separately, he noted such a form of myocardial infarction as abdominal. It occurs if blood circulation in the coronary arteries is disrupted. As a result, part of the heart muscle dies, which causes severe pain in the pancreas with spreading to the back and left side of the abdomen. A person experiences a crushing burning pain, which can be intensified by leaning forward. Such a syndrome is often accompanied by GI symptoms such as nausea, vomiting or bloating, as well as weakness, decreased blood pressure and dizziness.

"Pain syndrome in this case is associated with the lesion of the lower wall of the heart, which is close to the diaphragm, which explains the irradiation of pain to the abdominal region. Distinguish the abdominal form of myocardial infarction from diseases of the digestive system help ECG, echocardiography and blood tests for markers of necrosis of the heart muscle", - concluded Sokolov.

In October, cardiologist Anna Nebolsina told Izvestia about what products are harmful and useful for heart health. According to her, the diet should be rich in various substances such as fatty acids (omega-3), vitamins, antioxidants and minerals. These help lower bad cholesterol, help reduce inflammation and support organ and vascular function.
