Zhuravel, accused of state treason, sentenced to 14 years in prison

Volgograd regional court sentenced previously convicted Nikita Zhuravel on aggregate to 14 years in a penal colony on charges of state treason. This was reported on November 25 in the joint press service of the courts in the region.

"On the aggregate of crimes he was sentenced to imprisonment for a term of 14 years with serving in a correctional colony of strict regime, with subsequent restriction of freedom for a period of 1 year", - stated in the message of the judicial press service in Telegram.

The defendant pleaded guilty to committing a crime under Art. 275 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.

The fact that the prosecutor's office of Volgograd region approved the indictment in the criminal case against Zhuravel was reported on October 3. According to the investigation, Zhuravel offered cooperation to a representative of the Security Service of Ukraine and in March 2023 sent him video recordings of a train train transporting military equipment of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.

Back in May 2023 in Volgograd, Zhuravel burned a Koran near the Cathedral Mosque on the instructions of the Ukrainian security services. After that, investigators opened a criminal case on insulting the feelings of believers (part 2 of article 148 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). The case was transferred for investigation to the Investigative Department of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation in the Chechen Republic. Later the man was taken to the Grozny pre-trial detention center.

On February 27, 2024 the court in Grozny sentenced Nikita Zhuravel, who burned the Koran, to 3.5 years of imprisonment in a general regime colony. The victims in the case were 13 imams of Grozny mosques. On the same day Zhuravel himself said that he deserved the sentence. He also apologized for his deed to those who profess Islam.
