St. Petersburg and Cuba have agreed to increase trade turnover, support business and expand cultural projects, said Governor Alexander Beglov.
According to him, thanks to the course of the presidents of Russia and Cuba, relations between the countries are getting a new impetus, and St. Petersburg "has a special role in expanding mutually beneficial cooperation."
"Issues of economy, culture, preservation of common historical memory, development of youth contacts are among the main directions in further strengthening of friendly ties between St. Petersburg and Cuba," Beglov said following the visit of the St. Petersburg delegation to the island state.
He also emphasized that Russia and Cuba today are united by the desire to build a multipolar world with independent economies.
According to the website of the St. Petersburg administration, at the meeting with Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez, special attention was paid to the preservation of historical memory. In particular, according to Beglov, St. Petersburg will always remember that the siege of Leningrad was defended by Cuban patriots, fighting on one of the most difficult sections of the front - the Nevsky Heel.
During the visit, the Governor also laid flowers at the memorial to Soviet soldiers-internationalists in Havana.
