In South Korea, a man intentionally gained weight to avoid military service


In South Korea, a 26-year-old resident of the country was found guilty of deliberately gaining weight to avoid military service. This was reported by the Korean Herald on November 24.
The man was sentenced to one year in prison with a two-year suspended sentence for violation of the law on military service, which provides punishment (up to three years in prison) for evasion of service without a valid reason.
It is noted that in October 2017, the evader was suitable for the second category of fighters, but in June 2023, having gained weight to 102 kg with a height of 169 cm, he received the fourth category, which allowed him to avoid military service and work in a state agency.
The material reports that the young man gained weight following the advice of his friend. In this regard, the court also sentenced his comrade to six months in prison and two years of deprivation of the ability to hold certain positions for assistance in evading the draft.
Earlier, on 23 November, it was reported that Ukrainian border guards detained four men who evaded conscription into the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), who paid $10,000 each to a guide and tried to swim across the Tisa River on an inflatable boat.
