Plans for the accession of the Republic of Cyprus to NATO were discussed at a meeting between the president of the island state Nicos Christodoulidis and US President Joe Biden back in late October. This was reported by Greek newspaper Kathimerini on November 24.

"This is a detailed, thoughtful, long-term plan consisting of several interdependent stages, which has already been accepted by Washington," the newspaper said in its material.

It is noted that Christodoulidis also at the summit of the European political community in Budapest presented to the Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance Mark Rutte a plan for the phased accession of the state to NATO.

At the same time, the newspaper writes that Cyprus' accession to the alliance will directly depend on the settlement of the Cyprus conflict and improvement of relations with Turkey.

Earlier, on June 16, Reuters, citing a NATO diplomat, reported that Turkey had blocked the decision on the formulation of the geographical position, including with regard to Cyprus. However, he added that there was still a possibility to find a solution before the alliance summit.
