Russian neurosurgeon assesses availability of equipment for complex operations

All medical equipment necessary for surgical interventions is available in Russia, Semyon Melchenko, a neurosurgeon at the Federal Brain and Neurotechnology Center of the Russian Federal Medical and Biological Agency, told Izvestia.
He added that if there is a need for additional equipment in the center where he works, it appears quite quickly. Also, according to him, good analogs are produced in Russia.
"In particular, there are Russian navigation systems that make it clear where the doctor is in the skull cavity when operating on tumors, or aneurysms, or other complex pathology," he noted.
Melchenko emphasized that earlier such systems were mainly purchased abroad, but now they are manufactured in Russia.
The surgeon also noted that the same operations are available in Russia as in most countries where "medical tourists" from Russia go to get help.
"I have spoken to my colleagues on the sidelines about this more than once. It surprises me how developed medical tourism is in our country: people go to perform surgeries in Germany, South Korea, Italy, Israel, although there is no need for it," Melchenko said.
In Russia, he stressed, there are federal centers where all these operations are performed, and on the flow and sometimes much higher quality than in other countries.
