The Russian Foreign Ministry has refused to comment publicly on the candidacy of the Russian ambassador to the United States. The Foreign Ministry said this on November 24.

Earlier, Kommersant published information about the likely appointment of Alexander Darchiev, director of the Foreign Ministry's North America Department, to the post.

"With the candidate in Moscow decided long ago. It's been a secret for a couple of months now. Everyone knew," the Russian Foreign Ministry commented to TASS.

According to the diplomatic department, the decision is not publicly commented on due to legal restrictions.

Earlier, on October 5, Anatoly Antonov finished his work as Russia's ambassador to the United States and left the American territory. He had held this position since August 21, 2017.

Later, on October 7, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Russia will appoint its ambassador to the United States in due time due to the end of Antonov's work in this post. Thus, any downgrading of the Russian diplomatic mission in the United States is out of the question, he pointed out.
