Mikhail Kovalchuk will head the Scientific and Expert Council at the Maritime Board of the Maritime Collegium

Nikolai Patrushev, Chairman of the Maritime Board, proposed that Mikhail Kovalchuk, President of the Kurchatov Institute National Research Center, should head its Scientific and Expert Council. The final composition of the council will be approved in the near future, and its first meeting will be held in December, the press service of the Maritime Board specified.

The main tasks of the council will be to analyze the state and trends in the development of maritime activities in Russia and the world, to prepare proposals on priority directions of the national maritime policy and improvement of its legal framework. The new structure will also focus on the development of the scientific and technological complex, which ensures the construction of the Russian fleet and ship equipment, and the formation of systemic knowledge of the World Ocean.

The Council will have several sections in key areas, including Shipbuilding, Communications and Navigation Support for Maritime Activities, Robotic Systems, Crewless Ships and Vessels, Special Deep Sea Systems and Complexes, and International Scientific Cooperation in the Field of Maritime Activities and Development of the World Ocean. The new structure will involve representatives of research institutes, universities, agencies, media and other organizations that are not members of the Council.

Vladimir Putin signed a decree on the creation of the Maritime Board in August 2024 and appointed his aide Nikolai Patrushev as its head. He spoke about the tasks of the new structure in an exclusive interview with Izvestia.

Among other things, the Maritime Collegium is developing a strategy for the Navy, a draft of which will be prepared in 2025, taking into account the experience of the Strategic Defense Forces.
