A comprehensive treaty being prepared between Russia and Iran will cover the states' partnership in defense and security. This was announced by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko on November 24.

"As for the content of the said fundamental document, I would not reveal details ahead of time. I will only note that it will meet the challenges and requirements of modern times and cover virtually all relevant and promising areas of Russian-Iranian cooperation, including defense and security," TASS quoted him as saying.

Rudenko noted that the same provisions were described in a similar document of 2001, but due to the fact that the situation in the world has changed since its signing, it became necessary to change the treaty. He added that the situation in the regions has become more difficult, and in this regard, the states have taken measures to "strengthen security".

Earlier, on September 12, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that friendly relations between Russia and Iran have gained momentum in recent years with the support of Iranian Supreme Leader Seyyed Ali Khamenei. In addition, the Russian leader noted that within the framework of the Iranian president's visit to the Russian Federation, the countries are to sign a large interstate treaty, which is designed to "consolidate the entry of Russian-Iranian relations to the level of strategic partnership."

The work on a new grand treaty between Moscow and Tehran became known in September 2022. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Mehdi Safari said on June 26, 2024, that the document would soon be signed. According to him, there are no obstacles for the conclusion of a comprehensive cooperation agreement between Iran and Russia.

Relations between Moscow and Tehran are actively developing in different spheres. Russian President Vladimir Putin told about it during a meeting with heads of world news agencies on June 5. He emphasized that he would like the countries to make additional efforts to cooperate in the field of high technology. The head of state also added that the deceased President Ibrahim Raisi had done a lot for Iran and its cooperation with the Russian Federation.
