Women medics of the Zapad group of troops work in the Special Military Operation (SMO) zone and provide assistance to fighters. In a conversation with Izvestia, they told about the difficulties they face and what helps them in their service.

The commander of the medical platoon of the 169th Motorized Rifle Brigade with the call sign Osa joined the army as a volunteer, something her 20-year-old son is very proud of. The woman shared that she keeps all the toys, drawings and letters of support sent to her - they are like amulets for her.

"This is the kitty that my child sent me. We were on a combat mission, my UAZ was hit. The driver was wounded. I evacuated the driver from the car. I'm helping him, and the drone came. We quickly hid, and I jumped into the trench under the branches. The drone hovered over me, and at that moment the baby kitten rolled into my hands," she told Izvestia correspondent Alexander Fedorchak.

According to Osa, her first patients were prisoners of war. She shared that at first she didn't realize they were captured fighters until her colleagues told her about it.

The motivation for many women to join the army is the desire to defend their homeland on an equal footing with men. For example, a paramedic from the first artillery division with the call sign Mika initially volunteered to serve in the artillery, but became a medic because of her knowledge and skills as a doctor.

There are soldiers in the division who are the same age as Mika's oldest daughter, who is 18 years old. The woman shared that they sometimes call her mom.

"Mika loves it very much when people say hello from her homeland, the Novosibirsk region. Mostly children send letters for soldiers, which she carefully keeps. There are, for example, toys that have become mascots like this elephant," said correspondent Fedorchak.

Women who serve in the NWO zone were congratulated by their comrades on Mother's Day by recording a video.

"To all mothers on the planet. The best gift ever. Thank you moms for the warmth, tenderness and care that you give us. All tasks will be accomplished and your sons will come home. Your faith and love keeps us better than any body armor," the fighters said in their congratulatory message.

In July, Izvestia reported on volunteer instructors who train fighters in the special operation zone in tactical medicine. Girls also work among the instructors in the SWO zone. For example, a volunteer with the call sign Shakti noted that she was motivated to do this by her heart and her husband, who is also involved in combat operations.

The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was made against the backdrop of the aggravation of the situation in the region due to shelling by the Ukrainian military.
